Pain Management Meditation
Exercises and Inspirations

Introduction

Using pain management meditation is a personal journey, and while it can be helpful to have a personal teacher to guide you, there is nothing about it to prevent you from teaching yourself. Some of the benefits of your meditation practice will become clear almost immediately – you may feel calmer, more focused and more centered. A deep sense of connection to your inner self, an instinctive harmony with the world around you and a greater appreciation of your senses will become clearer over time.

Pain management meditation is an adventure and like all adventures there may be pitfalls or occasions when progress seems frustratingly slow. Don’t lose heart. Remember, while it feels right to meditate, it is worth persevering through times of difficulty. Meditation should never be a cause for discomfort, nor should it be boring or ineffective.

Before embarking upon any journey, it is important to equip yourself mentally and physically. Meditation helps to harness control of the mind and in turn alleviates the stress, anger and tension that are part of everyday life.

To be healthy human beings and to function at the peak of our potential, we need to achieve a balance of mind and body. If we serve our outer needs without allowing ourselves time for the person within, and especially if we ignore the inner voice that tells us to slow down or take a break, then at some point our health will begin to deteriorate. At the very least, our ability to withstand stress or anger will be weakened. Meditation is an effective way to ensure that we are not neglecting an important aspect of our well being – the state of our mind, and its optimum relationship with our body.

To achieve this goal, there isn’t any need to spend endless hours in strict contemplation. A few minutes each day can be enough, for pain management meditation. Gradually, we will begin to understand the mind-body relationship and in the process discover a new dimension in our lives. By learning to meditate we can even, in due course, tap into a source for healing and rejuvenation deep within ourselves. It is not the amount of time we spend in meditation that counts, but the development of our understanding during that time.

What is Meditation?

Expressed simply, meditation is the creation of a relaxed state of awareness of mind and body. Under normal circumstances, we experience relaxation and awareness as separate states, not simultaneously, and our concentration is most often directed toward the outside world – for example, when driving a car our thoughts are focused on what is happening on the road. In meditation, our awareness is directed inward to our private thoughts and feelings.

Traditional Eastern pain management meditation emphasizes the need to empty the mind of its swirling chatter so as to connect with a greater reality above and beyond.

Benefits are many. Good thoughts transcend into happiness, less stress, healthier immune system and hence, better health, happiness and enhanced pain management.

Why Meditate?

People turn to meditation for a variety of reasons. Many are drawn to it because they want to relax and eliminate unnecessary stress and tension in their lives. The effect of meditation is like taking a holiday – when you return you are refreshed and re-acquainted with yourself. You have a new perspective on your life and problems. But, like expensive holidays, meditation costs nothing and needs only a few minutes of your time each day. In a meditative state, your thoughts are what control your feelings, actions and happiness. Therefore, pain management is much easier and health restored, much quicker. In fact, once the meditation process is in command by your daily program, sickness is not a factor.

The practical and physical benefits of meditation are well recognized. Correct breathing, good posture and deep relaxation encourage the body to function more efficiently and can help relieve problems such as insomnia, high blood pressure and low energy levels. Meditate in a spirit of open-mindedness and you will find that you have a clearer understanding of how your body works and who you are. You will start to feel more relaxed and be able to concentrate better.
