Stroke Rehabilitation and Alternative Pain Management

People that have been stricken with a Stroke, DEFINITELY have the physical means to extend their range of motion. Victims realize that there is feeling when gently squeezing or pinching a hand, arm and shoulder. Therefore they do have the capability to enhance their daily lives, with the help of a Massage therapist and Reiki practitioner.

So many victims go through a SHORT program, lasting from 3 to 12 months. After the program, the process stops. He or she, is left alone at home or a care residence without any continuing program.

It is essential that they continue a program of treatment with massage, Reiki and physical therapies. If followed, they will reap the benefits in the short term.

After infliction, it is important to immediately enroll in a program. However, we have had success at substantially extending range of motion after 5 years using the “Lockhart Method”.

Essentially, the treatment process works with the erector spinae, scapula, trapezoid, neck, arm and hand. Meditation and breath work are also part of the treatment process. This treatment should take approximately 60 to 90 minutes, done initially 2 to 3 times a week for a period of 2 months, followed by 2 sessions per week for the next 2 months. By the end of the 4th month, range of motion should increase dramatically.

It is very important to be aware of the tenderness of the affected side. Therefore, gentle massaging is recommended at first and then increasing the pressure as you progress week by week. You will understand the client’s pain tolerance and therefore manage the pressure adequately.

Alternative pain management is essential and you will be rewarded and feel great in seeing the progress in range of motion, week by week.
